How to play

Getting started
  1. Create an account and pick your club. Choose the NHL or EIHL team you actually support. That choice decides where your franchise player comes from, and it locks once you have made that pick.
  2. Found your franchise. Name it, give it a three letter code, pick a colour and choose the system your team plays.
  3. Take your franchise player. Your first signing must come from your own club's roster. He stays with the franchise for good and cannot be released.
  4. Fill out the roster from the full pool. After the franchise pick, every player in both leagues is fair game.

Salary cap

Every player carries a cap hit based on how good he is. You cannot exceed the cap, and you cannot play a match until every slot is filled. More than one coach may sign the same player.

Playing a match

Matches are agreed between two coaches. You send a challenge and nominate the venue; the other coach accepts or declines. Once they accept, the game is played out immediately and the result goes on both records.

The result is driven by your roster: the attacking quality of your best forwards against the opposing defence and goaltending, plus a small home ice advantage and whatever system each club is playing. Two points for a win, one for losing in overtime or a shootout.

Systems
Balanced
No adjustment either way.
Attacking
More dangerous going forward, softer in your own end.
Defensive
Harder to break down, less of a threat at the other end.
Physical
A heavier game, at the cost of far more time in the penalty box.
Where the players come from

Rosters are imported from the NHL's public data feed and from the Elite Ice Hockey League's own site, so the player pool tracks the real clubs. Player attributes are derived from last season's production: scoring rate, ice time, plus/minus, penalty minutes and, for goaltenders, save percentage regressed for workload. Because the two leagues play at different levels, EIHL attributes are scaled to sit below their NHL equivalents.
